Mataatua Marae – Ngati Awa ki Tamaki Makaurau, is an urban Marae in Mangere. Mataatua opens its doors to a wide variety of whanau and community groups from South Auckland and beyond. As such, it is important to them that the Marae recognizes human diversity and is accessible and functional for a range of life scenarios such as pregnancy, childhood, disability and age.

A shortcoming for the Marae was its approach from the street and carpark. Manuhiri were unsure where to arrive and gather before they were welcomed on in the powhiri process. They then crossed into the Marae via a dilapidated, cracked concrete driveway which was unsuitable for those who used wheelchairs and prams. This was improved by replacing the concrete with Firth’s Declare certified concrete mix. A ramp was also installed so that those who needed it could enter the wharenui from the front, as per appropriate protocol, without needing to head to the back of the building. To further enhance the experience of being welcomed onto the Marae, the entrance was given definition and the fence and landscaping adjoining the pathway was improved.

Throughout the rest of the Marae, all buildings were repainted and the marakai was given a new lease of life. Whakairo were restored and reinstated, with some new whakairo created by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa – who also worked with whanau to paint murals inside the wharekai.
