Churchill Park Ngahere Enhancement.

CLIENT | Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council) Community Facilities

OUR ROLE | Project Management

Churchill Park is a 40-hectare public reserve in Glendowie, East Auckland. It is home to open grassed areas, native vegetation and several groups of 80–100-year-old pine trees. Keeping its history as Glendowie Farm, Churchill Park is managed as a “countryside in the city” and is used for a range of activities including grazing cattle, off-leash dog walking, and general recreation. It also contains several community facilities, including a playcentre, guide and scout hall, tennis club, and bowling club.

Many of the pines within the park have reached the end of their expected life span, with a number of them dying or falling each year. The management of the pines has become increasingly difficult, and the situation presents a unique opportunity to transition the pine stands to a mixture of native and exotic trees, to enhance the ngahere (forest) of the park over time.

Done. was engaged to project manage the development of a Ngahere Enhancement Plan to realise this vision. The project involved the management of a multi-disciplinary team including an arborist, planner, landscape architect, acoustic specialists, erosion and sediment control specialists and ecologists to produce the Plan. We also managed procurement, stakeholder engagement, community consultation, local board engagement and financial reporting. The public were supportive of the project and resource consent for the proposal was granted without public notification in late 2022.

The pines will be removed over a 3–5-year programme, with community-supported planting to take place each year following winter. The benefits of the project will include an increase in canopy cover, increased carbon sequestration, reduced damage to the watercourses in the park, increased biodiversity and local fauna, and improved health and safety (from reduced risk of falling trees).

Done. received some excellent feedback for this project from our client Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council). They said “This project was so well managed it was almost boring. I kept waiting for the drama, but it never came. Thank you.”
